Esterbrook Campground sits at 6,300 feet in the Laramie Peak Unit of the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests, a small and primitive refuge for campers who don't mind roughing it. The 12 widely spaced sites accommodate tents and RVs, but there's no water hookup, no dump station, and the water pump is often disabled. You'll reach the campground via 30 miles of paved and well-maintained gravel roads from Douglas.

Weather and SeasonsBest season: fall. Fall offers crisp, clear weather and the best combination of comfortable daytime temperatures (typically 40–65°F) and dramatically reduced insect activity, making it ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife viewing. Aspens and shrubs around the Laramie Peak ridge turn gold in late September through October, trout fishing remains productive in calmer streams, and you’ll encounter far fewer campers than in mid-summer. Expect chilly nights (often 15–35°F) and the start of hunting seasons —so

Natural Features and SceneryThe campground sits among ponderosa pines and shade trees on a ridge, with cool rock formations scattered throughout. Laramie Peak dominates the southern horizon. Reviewers mention a nearby swimming hole and describe the setting as very beautiful, with enough trees to provide shade and a sense of seclusion. The Laramie Range here is old granite and sedimentary rock, weathered over millions of years. Mule deer, elk, and black bears move through the area, and bald eagles circle overhead. You'll also spot bighorn sheep on rocky outcrops and hear goshawks in the forest.
