You need well-marked trails, maintained access roads, or a cabin layout that comfortably accommodates larger groups.

Best season: summer. Summer offers the best combination of reliable access, mild daytime temperatures (typically highs in the mid-60s to mid-70s°F) and long daylight for exploring. Trails, forest roads and fishing streams are usually free of deep snow by mid/late June, making hiking, mountain biking, horseback rides and trout fishing all at their peak. Wildlife viewing is excellent (elk, deer, moose and predators are active), while visitor numbers remain low-to-moderate because Scaler Guard Station is remote — still Peak months: July, August, September, October Avoid: March, April

The Scaler Guard Station offers a variety of amenities tailored to cabin camping and outdoor recreation. The cabin is equipped with a propane stove and oven, a propane refrigerator, propane lights, and a wood stove for heating. "The three-room guard station is a traditional 1930s-era forest cabin that sleeps six guests on three bunkbeds with mattresses." Outside the cabin, campers will find a picnic table and campfire ring. However, "there is no running water available at this cabin" and "no electricity, linens or bedding are provided." The bathroom facilities include a vault toilet located behind the structure. Some dishes, pots, pans, and utensils are provided, but "the presence of these items is not guaranteed." Firewood may be available as a courtesy, but "this is not guaranteed, and always be prepared to collect wood locally or bring it to the site." In winter months, there is no drinking water available, so campers must bring their own.
