Go if

Anglers and backcountry tent campers who bring their own water and don't mind rough roads will find Brown, Rainbow, and Bonneville Cutthroat in Hobble Creek, stock corrals for horse users, and a trailhead to the Lake Alice Trail a mile and a half east.

Skip if

No potable water, no showers, and a 35-mile access road that turns impassable in bad weather rules this out for anyone without a self-sufficient setup, and the facilities reviewers describe are rough even by primitive standards.

Overview

The Hobble Creek Campground is a beautiful and remote campsite on the Kemmerer Ranger District. The Hobble Creek Campground is located at the trailhead to Lake Alice and offers 18 campsites, toilet, trash and potable water in the summer on fish-filled Hobble Creek. Corrals are available for stock. Lake Alice, is a short 1.5 mile hike east from the campground. Trailers longer than 30 feet are not recomended. The Hobble Creek Campground is also located close to the Hobble Creek Trailhead where visitors and continue along Hobble Creek and eventually connect in to the historic Lander Cutoff of the Oregon Trail. Visitors are strongly encouraged to practice clean camping techniques and to store attractants (e.g. food, toothpaste) in a manner that makes them unavailable to bears.

About the campground

The elevation is 7,100 ft. The campground is at the end of a very long, rough drive located next to Hobble Creek in a sparse stand on Lodgepole pine. Two nice size corrals are located within the campground near Lake Alice Trail. The campground has an unkept appearance and is under-maintained.

Seasons & access

Open May 1 through Labor Day weekend - weather dependent NOTE: Because of a creek's high water, campground may be inaccessible until mid-July. Check status with Kemmerer Ranger District Office.

Facilities

The water spigot is a hand pump.

RV information

The parking aprons are grass and gravel. Because of the condition of access roads, sharp turn onto a bridge and high water over low-water bridge, the campground is not recommended for RVs.
