Holden Ballpark Campground sits in an open meadow one mile from Holden Village, at 3,300 feet in the Railroad Creek drainage. The single primitive tent site is a launching point for trails into the Glacier Peak Wilderness. Access requires a boat ride up Lake Chelan followed by a bus or hike, making this one of the most remote campgrounds in the North Cascades.
Holden Ballpark Campground provides a primitive camping experience.
Weather and SeasonsSummer is the practical window. Daytime highs run mid-50s to mid-70s°F, with long clear days and cold nights. Trails are fully accessible, wildflowers peak in early summer, and stargazing conditions are excellent when skies cooperate. Spring comes late at this elevation. Snow lingers into June most years. Fall arrives early, with freezing temperatures possible by September. Winter buries the site under deep snow and cuts off boat access on Lake Chelan, making the campground effectively unreachable.
ElevationPerched at 3,300 feet above sea level, the campground sits in that sweet spot where mountain air feels refreshingly thin but not overwhelming. This elevation places you high enough to escape the summer heat of the valleys below while remaining accessible to hikers of varying abilities. The altitude offers spectacular sunrise views and noticeably cooler evening temperatures that make for comfortable sleeping under the stars.
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground occupies a meadow surrounded by the jagged peaks of the Glacier Peak Wilderness. Railroad Creek flows through the valley, audible from the site. The terrain shows the work of ancient glaciers. Carved valleys, steep ridges, and hanging side canyons. Meadows transition to subalpine forest on the valley walls. From the open field, you can see multiple peaks and the wilderness corridor that stretches toward Glacier Peak itself. The elevation keeps temperatures cool even in summer, and the vegetation reflects that alpine influence.
Geological RegionCradled within the Railroad Creek drainage, this campground occupies a fascinating geological crossroads where ancient glaciers once carved their signatures into the landscape. The valley serves as a natural corridor into the heart of the Glacier Peak Wilderness, with Railroad Creek providing both a soothing soundtrack and a vital water source. This dramatic terrain, shaped by volcanic forces and sculpted by ice over millennia, creates a landscape of extraordinary contrasts—from gentle meadows to jagged peaks, all within view of your tent.
