Turkey Flat Forest Camp sits along the Wild and Scenic Lostine River at 5,315 feet in Wallowa Whitman National Forest. The campground has 10 primitive tent sites, each with a picnic table and fire ring, available for $10 per night. Sites are well-spaced among firs and pines, and the access road is slow going: washboard gravel for the first five miles, then big rocky gravel the rest of the way.
Turkey Flat Forest Camp is a small campground suitable for tent and primitive camping. The scenic location along the Lostine River makes it a tranquil spot for outdoor enthusiasts.
Weather and SeasonsSummer is the window here. Trails into the Eagle Cap Wilderness clear out, and daytime temperatures sit in the 60-80°F range with cool nights dropping to 35-50°F. Snowmelt keeps the river running well, and wildflowers peak in early to mid-summer. The elevation means the campground isn't accessible much of the year. Winter buries the area under more than six inches of snow with temperatures around 21°F. Spring and fall offer short transition windows with golden larches in autumn, but summer delivers the most reliable access and weather.
Natural Features and SceneryThe Lostine River runs clear and cold through a canyon carved by glacial forces and ancient volcanic activity. Granite spires and ridges rise above the corridor, part of the landscape Oregon locals call the state's Alps. Old-growth firs and pines shade the sites. Each campsite has direct access to the river, where rocky pools and rushing water meet the forest floor. The surrounding peaks tell the story of ice age sculpting, visible in the canyon's dramatic shape and the alpine meadows visible from higher ground.
