Go if

Anglers and birders who pack their own water and don't mind communal-feeling sites. The accessible fishing platforms on Eagle Creek are genuinely well-done, and Site 11's oversized parking apron (20x97 ft) is worth grabbing first if you need room.

Skip if

Privacy matters to you. The grass understory and close spacing mean you'll see and hear every neighboring camper. No water on-site either, cash or check only for payment, and no hookups of any kind make this a committed primitive experience.

Overview

Tamarack Campground is a small facility located along the Wild and Scenic Eagle Creek in the southern Wallowa Mountains. This open and sunny site has 12 tent/trailer sites and 3 that are fully accessible. A short accessible path leads down to the creek and ends at two fishing platforms. Popular activities include; fishing, hiking, and bird watching. With easy access, this campground can fill-up and particularly during holiday week-ends.

About the campground

The elevation is 4,500 ft. As the name suggests, this pack it in, pack it out campground is located in a stand of tamarack (a.k.a. Western Larch) above the Wild and Scenic Eagle Creek. Although none of the sites have a view of the creek, the rushing water can be heard throughout the campground. The grass understory and closely spaced camp sites result in poor privacy between campsites.
