Trout Lakes Campground sits at 9,429 feet in Carson National Forest, built around three alpine lakes that draw anglers from across northern New Mexico. The 12 primitive sites accommodate tents and small trailers. The campground stays quiet most of the year. Getting here requires attention: the access road turns slick and hazardous during rain, and high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles are strongly recommended.
The campground offers primitive camping with 12 campsites. It is geared towards tent camping and small camper/trailers. It is a no-fee site, making it especially attractive for budget-conscious campers.
Weather and SeasonsFall offers the best combination of scenery, solitude, and fishing. The aspens turn gold and the three lakes reflect crisp, clear skies. Daytime highs run 45–60°F, nights commonly drop to the 20s–30s°F, with a real chance of an early freeze by late October. These conditions concentrate trout feeding activity and make mornings and evenings excellent for casting. Trails and campsites are much quieter than summer, though hunters are active at certain times. Summer is temperate but wetter: monsoon rains from July through early September make the access road treacherous. Heavy snows close the road in winter.
Natural Features and SceneryThree alpine lakes anchor the campground, surrounded by mixed conifer forest and aspen stands. The lakes reflect the surrounding ridgeline on calm mornings. Aspens turn gold in fall, usually peaking in late September or early October depending on elevation and weather. The forest provides decent shade at most sites. At this elevation, the air is thin and nights cool down fast even in summer.
