Paddlers and anglers who can handle a 12-mile dirt road and pack in all their water. Fall is the move: cottonwoods go gold, temps are comfortable, and crowds drop after Labor Day. Grab a shaded site near the river before anyone else does.
The dirt road turns ugly after rain and can strand you or your rig. No potable water, no hookups, and RVs over 20 feet won't fit. Add cattle grazing near sites and wind exposure on the open spots, and light-packers expecting developed amenities will be miserable.

Fall is the prime season. Daytime highs run 55–75°F with nights in the 30s–40s, and the cottonwoods turn gold from late September through October. Fishing improves as fish feed ahead of winter, and crowds thin after Labor Day. Spring brings wildflowers and snowmelt-fed flows. Summer offers warm days for river activities and cool evenings. The site can become difficult to access during rainy weather due to road conditions.
Prime season with cottonwoods turning gold, cooler temps, improved fishing and strong praise in reviews.
The Rio Chama Campground offers a range of basic amenities suitable for small group camping. There are two group sites, each equipped with two picnic tables and fire rings. The site includes one vault toilet and a trash bin. However, there is no potable water available, and the lack of developed facilities means visitors must come prepared. The campground is accessible via a 12-mile dirt road, which can become difficult to traverse during or after rain. Reviewers have praised the cleanliness of the vault toilets, while noting that campsites vary significantly in shade coverage.
