AT hikers and fall foliage weekenders who carry their own water and don't mind sharing an 8-person shelter with strangers. October days in the mid-60s with ridge-top color and no bugs make this the obvious season to time a stop.

No potable water on site means anyone not carrying a filter or enough capacity is in trouble. Car campers or anyone expecting a reservable spot will also find this setup wrong for them, since it's hike-in only and strictly first-come.

Fall brings the best conditions. Mid-40s to mid-60s°F during the day, dropping into the 30s at night. Peak foliage highlights the ridgelines, trails are quieter than summer, and bugs disappear. Good for hiking and campfires. Winter sees freezing temperatures and snow. Late spring and early summer bring rain that keeps streams full.
Fall called out as best: peak foliage, quieter trails, cooler temps and fewer bugs.
Potable water is not available at this site.
