Self-sufficient tent campers or small-trailer rigs who want solitude near Yellowstone without paying for it. Three widely spaced sites, a vault toilet, fire rings, and wildflower meadows in summer make this a strong base if you haul your own water and firewood.
No potable water on-site and a rough, narrow access road filter out anyone traveling heavy or unprepared. The three sites fill fast on summer weekends, and if bears in camp at night require more than bear spray and good food storage habits, this isn't the right fit.

Summer brings the most reliable access and the warmest conditions, with daytime highs between 55 and 75°F and nights in the 30s and 40s. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so pack rain gear and layers. Snow can appear even in shoulder seasons when the valleys below stay clear. The high elevation means unpredictable weather year-round.

Timber Camp Campground is a primitive camping facility located in the West Absaroka Mountains within the Custer Gallatin National Forest. It is a free, first-come, first-serve campground with only three designated campsites. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire pit, and there is a single vault toilet available for use. However, there are no flush toilets, potable water supply, or trash collection services, so campers need to plan accordingly. Firewood is not provided, and campers are advised to bring their own. A small creek near the entrance to the campground provides access to non-potable water.
