The elevation is 5,720 ft. NOTE: The North Entrance (Roosevelt Arch) to Yellowstone National Park is 3 miles south of campground. This rustic pack it in, pack it out campground features breathtaking vistas of the northern side of Yellowstone National Park. It includes views of Mammoth and Electric mountains, Mammoth Hot Springs, and Beartooth-Absaroka Wilderness. The campground has two spurs. The main spur continues straight ahead to a dead end with a small turn-around (see RV comments). The second spur goes off to the right and leads to six horse corrals and two campsites. Horses are permitted only in the latter area. Eagle Creek runs through part of the campground and is a possible source of stock water. The authors favorite movie house experience occurred in Gardiner. In a narrow two-story building, formerly a granary before it was a roller rink, is the only movie house in Gardiner. As the authors purchased their tickets, freshly popped popcorn and soda, the usher said: “If we don’t have 6 people, we don’t show the film.” Well, there were nine and all enjoyed the film. The movie house is now closed. Gallatin National Forest 202 Many of the tent-only campsites can accommodate pop-up tent trailers. The campground is part of the Yellowstone bison's winter range. Summer brings elk in to graze on grass in the campground and the surrounding hillsides. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques. A food storage order is in effect from March 1 through December 1; check fee board for details. Bear boxes for the campers to stow food stuff are located throughout the campground. Possible day trips are Yellowstone National Park, the community of Gardiner, MT and rafting on the Yellowstone River; contact Gardiner Ranger District Office for outfitters.
The parking areas are grassy and open field-like - not clearly designated. Leveling at most campsites might be a challenge. The turn radius of the main spur's dead-end limits motorhomes to no longer than 30-ft (without a towable). Unhooking towed vehicle before committing to the main spur, is recommended. Travel trailers longer than 25 ft. should not attempt negotiating the main spur turn-around. An RV dump station with potable water is available, for a fee, at Yellowstone RV Park, located at the north end of Gardiner, between Mile Marker 1 and 2 on US Rt 89. In Gardiner, MT, just before the Yellowstone River bridge, take Jardine Rd. (sign says "Jardine-5") 2.2 miles to campground sign on left. NOTE: The elevation gain from Gardiner to the campground is 760 ft on a dirt and gravel road with a washboard surface and two hairpin turns.

Best season: summer. Comfortable daytime temps (75°F), cool nights (49°F), low precipitation, and ideal for hiking and fishing activities. Peak months: June, July, August, September Avoid: November, December, January, February, March Special considerations: Mountain weather is highly variable; afternoon thunderstorms common in summer. Strong winds require well-staked tents. Bears frequent area—use bear boxes for all food storage.
Likely excellent for fall color and fewer bugs; cooler temps expected (inferred).
