Bighorn Canyon has two districts that are separated by a three hour drive. To get to the North District at Fort Smith, MT from Billings, take Interstate 90 south to Hardin, MT. Turn at exit 495 onto State Highway 313 to St. Xavier and then to Fort Smith, Montana. To get to the South District at Lovell, WY from Billings, MT, take Interstate 90 west. Turn at exit 434 at Laurel, MT. Turn onto US 310 East/US 212 South. Turn at US 310 East to Lovell. The visitor center is on the east side of Lovell.

Summer offers the warmest, most reliable weather for lakeside activities — expect daytime highs commonly in the mid-70s to low-90s°F (24–33°C) with cool nights in the 40s–50s°F (5–15°C) at 3,200 ft. Boating, swimming, fishing on Afterbay Lake, long hikes along Bighorn Canyon rims, and abundant wildlife viewing are at their peak, and campground services and hosts are present from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Crowds are highest in July, but the payoff is full access to water recreation and all- Peak months: July, August, June, September

Grapevine Campground, open year-round, is located near Fort Smith, Montana, on the north shore of Afterbay Lake. It offers 14 RV and tent sites, all handicapped accessible with fire rings, picnic tables, and vault toilets. Trash cans are available seasonally (May-Oct). There are no RV hookups, but an RV dump station and drinking water are accessible across Afterbay Lake. The campground is gravel-based, and cell service is unavailable.
