July camping here means serious bugs, one reviewer compared the pit toilet to a fly convention, and there's no potable water on site. Also, only one site fits RVs over 21 feet, so bigger rigs should confirm before making the 30-minute drive from Grand Marais.

Fall delivers the clearest benefits. Late September brings vivid golds and reds in the forest, with daytime highs in the mid-40s to mid-60s and nights dropping to 25–40°F. Insects vanish, the air cools, and the lake often turns glassy for paddling. Summer is warm and humid, but July brings heavy bug activity that reviewers specifically complained about. Winter transforms the area into a frozen landscape requiring serious cold-weather preparation.
Fall praised: vivid golds/reds, clearer conditions, insects vanish and great wildlife viewing.
Clara Lake Rustic Campground offers minimal amenities in a serene, natural environment. Visitors should expect a rustic camping experience with fire rings, tent pads, and latrines available. However, there are no trash services or potable water on-site. Campers must pack out all waste, including fish remains, and treat or boil water from the lake before using it.
