Historical Significance
The park protects a variety of northwest Florida coastal ecosystems and is a designated gateway site on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. The state acquired land for the park beginning in 1977 and the site is valued for conservation and public access to traditional coastal boating and fishing areas.Weather and SeasonsPlan your visit for spring or fall to experience the campground at its finest—these shoulder seasons bring comfortable temperatures, lower humidity, and spectacular bird migrations that turn the marshes into a birdwatcher's paradise. Summer camping offers its own rewards with long beach days and warm water, though you'll want to pack for afternoon thunderstorms, embrace the humidity, and bring your bug spray. Winter provides a peaceful escape with mild temperatures, though those breezes off the water can add a crisp edge to morning coffee by the campfire.
Natural Features and SceneryYour camping adventure unfolds where pine flatwoods meet the ever-changing tidal marshes of Big Lagoon and the Intracoastal Waterway. Wander elevated boardwalks that carry you above swaying marsh grasses, offering sweeping views across shallow bays where herons stalk their prey and dolphins occasionally surface. The landscape shifts beautifully from scrubby coastal flatwoods to sandy pine ridges, creating a diverse tapestry of habitats that draw an impressive variety of shorebirds, wading birds, and marine life right to your doorstep.
