Go if

Families or couples who want swimming and redwood hiking without a crowded campground. June and July hit the sweet spot for river swimming, the 10-mile trail network is right there, and bald eagles plus river otters make wildlife watching genuinely easy.

Skip if

Late-summer swimmers should know algae blooms hit the Eel River by August, which makes the water off-limits for kids and dogs. Also: only 3 sites, reservations required via ReserveCalifornia, and there's no shower on the amenity list.
