Backpackers who want old-growth solitude without a permit maze. Summer is the sweet spot: trails are dry, river levels drop for fishing steelhead and salmon runs happen fall/winter with barbless hooks, and a $5 reservation beats fighting for a developed site.
Carrying all your water in is a hard requirement here, not a quirk. No fire rings, no showers, no host on site, and emergency services are 45 miles away in Eureka. Drive-up campers or anyone relying on a campfire should pick a developed site on Avenue of the Giants instead.

Summer brings daytime highs in the mid-60s to high-70s, occasionally low 80s, with nights in the low 50s. Trails and primitive sites stay driest May through September, when river levels also drop for safer access. Winter sees temps in the 50s by day, 20s and 30s at night. Most of the region's 60-80 inches of annual rain falls October through May, creating muddy trails and thick fog. Early summer still has wildflower color from spring growth. Expect moderate weekend crowds during peak season.
