Arriving without the Recreation.gov app pre-installed is a real problem here since there's little to no cell service on-site and that's the only way to pay. Anyone who needs a guaranteed site should also look elsewhere: no reservations means no sure thing, especially on fall week

<p>Howard Lake is a 20-acre lake. It is a popular primitive experience. A high-clearance vehicle is needed to cross the creek on one section of the road into Howard Lake.</p><p>Avoid parking or pitching tents under dead standing trees. Use extreme caution in high winds. Downed trees, dropped limbs, stump holes and unstable terrain may be present. Fishing may be impacted by lilly pads and low water levels.</p>

This location is available on a first-come, first-served basis only. Visitors are required to physically arrive at the campground to purchase and claim a site.

Expect crisp mornings and pleasant days (typically cool to warm depending on elevation; roughly 40s–60s°F mornings and 50s–70s°F afternoons at many mid‑elevation Meado w sites), colorful foliage where there are deciduous trees, and calmer evenings for stargazing or campfires (subject to local fire restrictions).
