Historical Significance
Trails in and near the park lead to historic mine sites in the Buckskin and Copper Mine areas, remnants of regional mining activity.Weather and SeasonsFall brings the most comfortable weather. Daytime highs in the low 70s to mid-80s°F with cool nights in the 50s°F, good for paddling, hiking, and campfires. River recreation peaks then with lower heat and reduced monsoon risk. Summer is very hot, so campers rely on water activities, shade, and air-conditioned RVs. Weekend stays from April 1 through September 30 require a two-night minimum. Expect moderate crowds on weekends and holidays, especially at riverfront sites.
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground splits between two landscapes: riverside lawns shaded by cottonwoods near the water, then Sonoran Desert hillsides with saguaros and rocky terrain as you climb away from the river. Many sites have direct river frontage. From the Lightning Bolt Trail and other short paths near the camp store, you get elevated views of the Colorado, the entire campground below, and the California shoreline across the water. Benches at overlooks and along riverside paths are good spots to watch boat traffic, sunrises, and sunsets. A desert tortoise lives in the cactus garden by the store.
