About Lahontan Campground

River Campground sits below Rye Patch Dam at the edge of an 11,000-acre reservoir, shaded by mature trees that are rare in Nevada's high desert. The campground has 25 sites, most large enough for big rigs, with three electric hookups in a separate gravel lot. It's first-come, first-served, though that may shift to reservations. You can walk to the water and drive a few minutes to the boat ramp.

Natural Features and SceneryThe campground occupies a strip of shoreline directly below the dam, where the reservoir stretches 22 miles when full and provides 72 miles of shoreline for exploring. Mature trees cover the sites, creating pockets of shade that stand out against the surrounding sparse desert scrub. Mountain ridges frame the horizon in multiple directions. At night, you can hear the river rushing through the dam. The water near camp is calm enough for kayaks and wading. High-desert terrain means big skies, dry air, and temperature swings.
