Best season: spring. Spring offers the best balance of milder weather, wildlife activity, and lower crowds — expect cool, damp days with highs roughly 40–55°F (4–13°C) by late May and longening daylight. Migratory birds are arriving, wildflowers and alder leaf-out color the shoreline, and early salmon runs start to pick up, making beachcombing, tidepooling, and wildlife viewing especially rewarding. Trails are less crowded than summer, and you’ll often have the sandy stretch and cabin solitude to yourself while boat Peak months: June, May, July, August Avoid: December, January
Spring noted as best balance: migrating birds, beachcombing, mild daytime temps and increasing daylight.

Softuk Bar Cabin is a remote lodging option within Chugach National Forest. It provides very basic amenities suited for self-reliant campers. Key facilities include a 12x14-ft rustic cabin structure with wooden bunkbeds (no mattresses) accommodating up to six individuals, a table, wood and oil stoves for heating, an axe, splitting maul, saw, rainwater catchment barrel, and an outdoor pit toilet. There is no running water or electricity. Campers must bring their own essentials, including drinking water, cut firewood, food, sleeping pads, cook stoves, matches, and garbage bags. The site also has no garbage disposal features, necessitating a pack-out policy. As described officially: "Visitors must bring their own food, water, #1 stove oil, cut firewood, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cook stoves, matches, cooking gear/utensils, a lantern or flashlight, toilet paper, first aid kit and garbage bags." User reviews highlight challenges with accessing the facility during wet conditions, as noted by one reviewer: "This year it was difficult to get the airplane near the cabin. If things dry out a bit this will change."
