Best season: fall. Fall offers the most dramatic combination of weather, color and solitude at 8,000 ft — crisp days (typically 35–60°F) and frosty nights that turn willows and aspens to bright gold while crowds thin after Labor Day. Hiking, shoreline photography, late-season fishing (cool, clear water) and reliable wildlife viewing during elk and deer rut are at their peak, and trails are generally snow-free through much of September and early October. Expect fewer visitors than July, easier access to trailheads, Peak months: September, October, August, July Avoid: November, January, February, March
