Horse camp (horsecamp) available on a first-come, first-served basis with 7 long pull-through spurs and horse facilities. Visitors must arrive on-site to claim and pay for sites; Recreation.gov mobile app may be used for on-site payment if available.
Weather and SeasonsBest season: summer. Summer offers the most reliable access and the warmest, driest weather for horse trailers and day hikers — plan on daytime highs roughly 65–85°F and cool nights around 40–55°F in this mountain river setting. Trails that follow Rock Creek and the Chiwawa River are fully passable, water access for stock is easiest, and wildflower/meadow scenery is at its peak. Expect the busiest weekends (first-come, first-served sites can fill early), so arrive early in the day and be prepared for occasional fire
Peak months: July, August, June, September
Avoid: December, January, February
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground occupies the confluence of Rock Creek and the Chiwawa River, where the two waterways merge in a setting of dense forest and riverside habitat. Trails depart directly from camp, including the Basalt Ridge Trail #1527 and Rock Creek Trail #1509, giving stock riders immediate access to backcountry routes. Water access for horses is easiest here during summer when flows stabilize.
