Backpackers staging for Spider Gap or other Chiwawa-area routes will find this exactly right: quiet sites, clean bathrooms, and enough solitude on weekdays that you might be the only one there. Arrive early on summer weekends since all 8 sites fill by mid-morning.
The final 11 miles of access road is rough gravel and dirt, and low-clearance vehicles genuinely shouldn't attempt it. Campers expecting good river swimming or fishing will also be let down; reviewers consistently flag that river access is poor despite the water being right there

This location is available on a first-come, first-served basis only. Visitors are required to physically arrive at the campground to purchase and claim a site. Once on-site, you may be able to pay for your campsite(s) by scanning a QR code using the Recreation.gov mobile app, and the Scan and Pay feature.

Best season: summer. Summer delivers the most reliable weather for riverside camping — expect warm, dry days in the low 70s to mid-80s°F and cool nights in the 40s–50s°F, making river wading, fishing, day hikes and stargazing comfortable. The Chiwawa River is at lower, clearer flows and surrounding trails are generally snow-free, so things are most accessible and scenic then. The campground is small (8 sites) so it stays relatively peaceful, but sites are first-come, first-served and can fill by mid-morning on busy, Peak months: July, August, June, September Avoid: December, January, February
