History-curious campers and RVers who grab B loop early will do well here. Level, paved pads handle rigs comfortably, while A loop's wooded sites suit tent campers who want shade. The 1.5-mile James River shoreline and fossil shark-tooth hunting on the beach are the real draws.
No cell service and no camp store mean you're genuinely on your own once you arrive. Stock up before you cross the James River ferry. Weekend spots fill fast in summer, and the pool, mansion tours, and visitor center have all closed without notice during off-seasons.

Fall delivers the best balance: daytime highs in the 50s–70s°F, cool nights in the 40s–50s°F, vivid foliage along the river, and reduced insects. Summer brings access to the swimming pool and warm beach use but also higher heat, humidity, and full weekend campgrounds. Loop A Sites 19-50 have electricity and water; they can accommodate tents and pop-ups, and some sites can fit RVs up to 30 feet long. Most sites aren't level. The amphitheater, just behind the bathhouse, is also by this loop. Sites accept 20 and 30-amp current. Tent campers prefer these sites because they're shadier than those in loop B.
