No cell service is the real story here, AT&T gets nothing, Verizon is spotty at best. Also, pets aren't allowed, and this is bear country with no food storage lockers provided, so sloppy camp kitchen habits are a genuine problem.

Fall offers the best combination of mild weather and peak color along the James River. Daytime highs commonly sit in the 50s–60s°F from mid-October through early November, with crisp mornings ideal for hiking and paddling. River vistas and hardwood ridges light up during this window, insects decline, and fishing from shore or canoe stays productive. Weekdays are pleasantly quiet; weekends draw moderate crowds but remain less busy than midsummer. Summer is peak season for river tubing and swimming, but brings more bugs and higher visitation around holiday weekends. Shoulder seasons in late spring and early fall preserve good hiking and river views with cooler temperatures and fewer campers. Winter camping is possible, though services remain limited and water-based activities lose appeal in cold weather.
Peak season with warm days. Most facilities open. Reserve ahead.
