Burke Lake Park Campground sits on 888 acres of wooded parkland wrapped around a 218-acre lake, just 25 minutes from Washington DC. The campground offers 100 primitive sites (no hookups) with recently upgraded bathhouses, operating mid-April through late October. Sites accommodate tents and RVs up to 25 feet and are available first-come, first-served, with group reservations for parties of 20 or more.
Approximately 100 shaded, primitive-style sites serving tent campers and small RVs (reports indicate sites accommodate RVs up to about 25 feet); group reservations are available for larger parties.
Weather and SeasonsThe campground operates from the third weekend in April through the last weekend in October. Spring brings fresh green canopy and migrating birds, while fall delivers warm golds and reds across the lakeside forest. Summer weekends see the heaviest use and can get loud with group activity. Winter closes the campground but the park trails remain open for wildlife viewing, especially waterfowl on the lake.
Natural Features and SceneryA 218-acre lake anchors the park, surrounded by mature forest that draws waterfowl in winter and bald eagles year-round. A 4.5-mile trail circles the entire shoreline through deciduous woods where deer, songbirds, and other wildlife appear regularly. Vesper Island, a state wildlife refuge, sits in the middle of the lake as a protected sanctuary visible from shore. The forest canopy provides heavy shade across most campsites, and the lake's calm surface reflects the surrounding trees.
Scenic ViewsScenic lake views from the perimeter trail and many campground areas; wildlife including waterfowl and occasional bald eagle sightings around the lake.
