Sam Brown Campground, Wild Rivers Ranger District, Siskiyou National Forest, Oregon
Tent campers and mountain bikers who pack in water and want a low-cost base for the Briggs Creek or Taylor Creek trails. Spacious, shaded sites and deer grazing at meadow's edge make mornings here genuinely pleasant.
No potable water on-site means hauling everything from Merlin, 45 minutes out. Sparse understory means your neighbors are always visible, and maintenance complaints suggest don't expect a well-groomed facility.

Sam Brown Campground is centered around a large meadow that has a colorful history of the earlier miner and homesteader to the area. Trails are located throughout the area, as well, with options for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and motorcylces, including Elkhorn Mine Jeep Road.

Nearby trail opportunities include:

Briggs Creek Trail #1132 (the trailhead located in campground)

Taylor Creek Trail #1142

Onion Way Trail #1157

Secret Way Trail #1282

Dutchy Creek Trail #1154

The size of this campground, and nature of the landscape, lends itself to large group camping, with 2 picnic shelters, and and amphitheater. The elevation is 2,000 ft. This attractive campground, on the former Ferrin Ranch land, is a single loop that meanders down a hillside and through a stand of fir and pine, providing ample shade. The campsites are spacious but a limited middlestory provides minimal privacy. A head stone near the picnic area is marked "Sam Brown." Perhaps he was a ranch foreman - no one knows for sure. Although the campground is the hub for several trails, it appears relatively undiscovered. Occasionally, elk have been sighted in adjacent meadows. The tent sites are all walk-in. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques.
Open Memorial Day weekend through mid-October - weather dependent
A solar shower house is available.
The parking are dirt. Grey water disposal sites are scattered throughout campground.

Summer delivers the most reliable conditions: highs in the mid-60s to low-80s°F, cool nights in the 40s-50s°F, and mostly dry weather. Trails and creek access are at their best, meadows stay lush, and wildlife is active mornings and evenings. Expect more visitors on holiday weekends and through July-August, though the spacious sites and shade keep things comfortable. Late summer can bring drier conditions. Winter sees rain and occasional snow, transforming the meadow into a quiet, crisp landscape. Spring brings wildflowers and moderate temperatures good for hiking.
Summer offers most reliable weather, lush meadows and best trail/creek access; peak season noted.
