Best season: summer. Summer offers the clearest access and the signature alpine wildflower display (beargrass, Snow Mountain buckwheat, penstemon) that crowns Onion Mountain—peak flowering often occurs in late June through July. Expect pleasant mountain days (roughly 65–80°F) with cool nights (40s–50s), making hiking, summit photography, and wildlife viewing ideal. Trails and the lookout see the most visitors on summer weekends, and you should watch for wildfire smoke and fire restrictions during the peak season. Peak months: July, August, June, September Avoid: December, January, February
Summer offers clearest access and peak wildflower displays late June–July; daytime 65–80°F.

Onion Mountain Lookout provides basic amenities designed for a unique camping experience at a high elevation. The facility includes a 14x14 foot cabin equipped with a bed, mattress, table, chairs, a propane cooking stove, refrigerator, and lanterns. However, there is no propane heater and no water on site, requiring visitors to bring their own drinking, cooking, and washing supplies. A primitive vault toilet is nearby along with space for four to five tents. Visitors must supply their own sleeping bags, towels, dish soap, matches, cooking gear, toilet paper, and garbage bags.
