Families with bikes are the natural fit: paved paths run throughout, the staffed beach opens mid-June, and loops A and B have renovated bathhouses. Loop D is worth requesting specifically for the tree cover and spacing that most of the park lost to ash borer removal.

Summer delivers the park's prime season, with daytime highs in the mid-70s to mid-80s°F and lake temperatures reaching the mid-60s to low 70s°F by mid-June. Swimming beaches are officially open through Labor Day, when facilities are fully staffed and boat launches most accessible. July and August bring the heaviest crowds. The lake's influence triggers occasional dramatic storms, followed by clear days that stretch visibility across the water. Winter opens the trails to cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Fall colors peak in the wooded sections, though beach activities wind down after September.

PETS: 2 Pets ONLY allowed in "A" "B" and "C" LOOPS ONLY. They must be on a leash (max. 6ft. long) and have a current rabies certificate. Pets are not allowed in the restrooms, buildings, on the beach, or past "C" Loop. Currently open for reservations only. No walk-ins. Same-day reservations can be made with Reserve America only before 3 pm. Only two vehicles are allowed per campsite. As of 2024 , camper registration is at the camping office instead of the main visitor center.
