Best season: spring. Late spring offers the best combination of mild weather and active river fishing — expect daytime highs around 50–70°F and cool nights around 25–40°F as snowmelt swells the Rio Fernando and wildflowers bloom on the canyon slopes. Hikers and anglers will find trails and fish runs in peak condition before summer afternoon storms arrive, and crowds remain light compared with summer holiday weekends. Because the site is primitive and at 7,825 ft, spring brings crisp, starry nights and excellent bird Peak months: May, June, July, September Avoid: December, January, February
Late spring described as best: snowmelt swells the river, improves fishing and wildflowers bloom.
La Sombra Campground is a lesser-visited camping destination in the Taos Canyon area, notable for being near Capulin Campground and Shady Brook. The campground lacks drinking water facilities and garbage services, which could impact convenience for visitors. Its proximity to Rio Fernando offers fishing opportunities.
