Cebolla Mesa Campground sits on a high desert plateau in Carson National Forest, 800 feet above the Rio Grande Gorge. The campground has five dispersed sites within piñon-juniper woodland, all free of charge. It's quiet, remote, and accessed via a bumpy dirt road a few miles off Highway 522.
Cebolla Mesa Campground offers primitive, tent, and RV camping options. Group camping, cabin lodging, and glamping are not available.
Weather and SeasonsFall brings the best conditions. Daytime temperatures run mid-50s to mid-60s°F in September and October, with nights dropping into the 20s and 30s°F. Natural Features and SceneryThe campground perches at the rim of the Rio Grande Gorge at 7,369 feet elevation. Views stretch across the canyon to the river below, which has carved through layers of volcanic basalt and sedimentary rock over millions of years. Piñon pines and junipers grow from rocky soil across the mesa. There's no shade at the sites themselves. The landscape is all exposed plateau, open sky, and the kind of high desert where raptors circle at eye level. On the Cebolla Mesa Trail down to the river, petroglyphs mark the route.
Geological RegionCebolla Mesa Campground sits atop one of nature's most dramatic stages—a high desert plateau where millions of years of geological forces have created a masterpiece of erosion and time. The piñon-juniper woodland that characterizes this region represents an ancient ecosystem perfectly adapted to the arid conditions and rocky soils. Below, the Rio Grande continues its patient work, flowing 800 feet beneath the campground through the magnificent gorge it has carved from volcanic basalt and sedimentary layers, creating a living testament to the power of water and time in shaping the American Southwest.
