Historical Significance
Located within the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument and near Wild Rivers Recreation Area; area has regional historical and cultural significance associated with northern New Mexico high plains and the Rio Grande corridor.Weather and SeasonsThis high-desert landscape experiences the full swing of seasons, from summer days that range between 45°F and 90°F to winter cold snaps that can plunge to -15°F (though 45°F is more typical). July and August bring the monsoon season, when afternoon thunderstorms paint the sky and fill the air with the smell of wet sage, while November through March often dust the higher elevations with snow, turning the rim into a winter wonderland.
Natural Features and SceneryStand at the edge of an 800-foot-deep chasm where ancient basalt flows tell stories millions of years old and the Red River tumbles into the Rio Grande far below. The high desert plateau around you is anything but empty—gnarled piñon and juniper trees, some centuries old, share space with ponderosa pine groves, sagebrush meadows, and clusters of hardy cactus, all framed by distant peaks that wear snow like crowns much of the year. Keep your eyes open for desert bighorn sheep picking their way along rocky ledges, mule deer and elk grazing at dawn and dusk, and raptors riding the thermals above the gorge.
