Bighorn Canyon has two districts that are separated by a three hour drive. To get to the North District at Fort Smith, MT from Billings, take Interstate 90 south to Hardin, MT. Turn at exit 495 onto State Highway 313 to St. Xavier and then to Fort Smith, Montana. To get to the South District at Lovell, WY from Billings, MT, take Interstate 90 west. Turn at exit 434 at Laurel, MT. Turn onto US 310 East/US 212 South. Turn at US 310 East to Lovell. The visitor center is on the east side of Lovell.

Summer is the clear highlight for Dayboard 9 — the campground opens Memorial Day through Labor Day and offers prime boating, paddling, and canyon-view camping when Bighorn Lake is at its most accessible. Expect daytime highs commonly in the low 60s to 70s°F with cool nights around the upper 40s to mid-50s°F, clear skies for stargazing, and calm mornings ideal for launching boats from Okabeh Marina (9 miles north). Dayboard 9 Campground is a small, primitive campground accessible only by boat. It features gravel campsites equipped with picnic tables, bear boxes, and fire pits. During the summer season (Memorial Day through Labor Day), campers can benefit from a courtesy dock and a floating comfort station.
