No potable water, no flush toilets, and no way to hold a site in advance. If your group paddles in to find both spots taken, you're rerouting. Car campers, RVs, and anyone without a canoe or kayak can't reach this place at all.

This is one of our Backcountry sites which is a near- wilderness single party site and is accessible only by foot or boat. These sites are first come, first served. There are 2 sites on this lake, each have a fire grate, a latrine and may have a picnic table. A few reminders: Hang food packs, put your fire out each time you leave your campsite, treat or boil all water, wash yourself and dishes at least 150ft from any body of water, pack out all garbage and Leave No Trace. Use a Forest Map to locate campsites and accesses.

Access to the 2 sites on this lake is a boat ramp on Johnson Lake, portage to little John, then up the Royal River and into South Fowl Lake. While traveling on the Royal River you will need a permit for the BWCAW.
Compare with similar sites, watch availability, and build a packing list — Camp Sage handles all of it.
Fall delivers the best conditions. September through early October brings daytime highs of 45–60°F and nights near freezing, with maples and birches turning gold against the granite. Bugs drop off sharply, and traffic thins compared to summer. Pack warm layers. Daylight shortens and nights get cold. Hunting season overlaps with peak color. Summer is warm enough for swimming but brings heavy mosquito and blackfly pressure. Winter sees extreme cold and frequent snow.
Sept–early Oct cited as best: cool days, near-freezing nights, gold foliage and fewer bugs.
Potable water is not available at this site. Restrooms are not available at this site.
