Traveling northeast or southwest on MN Hwy 61 visitors will see signs alerting the approach to Grand Portage National Monument. A right turn exit lane or left turn from Hwy 61 at the Grand Portage Trading Post will take visitors onto Casino Road. Turn left at the first stop sign from Casino Road to Mile Creek Road. About 3/4 mile on Mile Creek Road, look for the large wooden entrance sign. Turn left up the short hill into the Heritage Center parking lot.

Best season: summer. Summer offers the most reliable weather and easiest access — expect warm, mostly dry days (typical highs about 65–80°F, nights 45–55°F) that make backcountry hiking and paddling on the Pigeon River most comfortable. Water levels are generally navigable for day paddles and short trips, wildflowers and mosquito activity taper off after early June, and the long daylight hours maximize exploration time. Crowds are moderate compared with nearby day-use areas, but the sites remain remote so plan for a Peak months: July, August, September, June Avoid: December, January, February
