Minneopa State Park's group campground sits in a quiet oak woodland near Tiger Lake, away from the main A and B loops. Four group sites offer electric hookups, flush toilets, and showers by reservation. The park centers on Minneopa Creek's twin waterfalls and a 325-acre bison range, all within a short drive or hike of the group area.
This is a group campground offering multiple reservable group sites in a wooded, secluded area separate from the main A/B loops. The group sites are non-electric; the park also contains individual drive‑in campsites and other lodging options elsewhere in the park.
Historical Significance
Seppmann Mill, a wind-driven grist mill built in German style from native stone and lumber, stands in the park. Trails and overlooks interpret the local geology and the Minneopa Creek valley.Weather and SeasonsSpring delivers the most dramatic waterfall displays as snowmelt and spring rains swell Minneopa Creek, plus fresh green prairie and wildflower blooms that make hikes and wildlife viewing. Including the bison. Especially rewarding. Expect daytime highs roughly 50–70°F in April through June with cool nights, so bring layers and waterproof footwear for muddy or slippery gorge trails. Trails and overlooks are busiest on weekends; weekdays or early mornings give a quieter experience. Summer brings lush waterfalls and active bison but also the worst mosquitoes and more crowding. Late spring and early fall offer more comfortable temperatures, fewer insects, and good waterfall flow. The park is open year-round; winter campers use part of the main loop for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Natural Features and SceneryMature oaks shade the group sites and frame views of the surrounding woodland. Beyond the campground, Minneopa Creek carves a limestone gorge that drops into two waterfalls. Upper and lower Minneopa Falls. Visible from trails and overlooks. A historic limestone stairway descends to the creek's edge. The park mixes oak savanna, native prairie, and lush creek valleys. The bison range stretches across 325 acres of grassland; you'll drive the bison loop (open Thursday through Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) to watch the herd from your vehicle. Deer, turkey, bald eagles, and beaver appear throughout the park. Raccoons visit camp after dark, so secure food.
