Historical Significance
The Soudan Underground Mine, a former iron mine within the park, offers tours that reviewers describe as amazing (currently closed until 2026). The banded iron formations visible throughout the park represent some of Earth's oldest rock layers, formed when iron deposits settled in ancient seas.Weather and SeasonsSummer brings highs in the mid-60s to low-80s°F with cool evenings (45-60°F), ideal for boating, swimming, and fishing for walleye and northern pike. Wildlife viewing peaks at dawn and dusk. Winter transforms the cabins into cozy retreats with well-packed trails for cross-country skiing and hiking, though cabins lack running water during cold months and require use of central shower facilities nearby. The ranger station runs full hours May through September, then shifts to modified hours for fall and winter.
