Best season: summer. Summer offers the most reliable access and the warmest daytime temperatures (typically mid-60s to low-80s°F, nights in the mid-30s to 50°F), making it ideal for hiking, exploring the old mining sites, and running day trips on the Custer Motorway. Trails, historical sites, and scenic overlooks are fully accessible and free of deep snow, while the six-site campground provides a quiet base—expect moderate crowds on summer weekends because sites are limited. Be prepared for afternoon mountain storms Peak months: July, August, September, June Avoid: December, January, February
Museum open Memorial Day–Labor Day; trails and Motorway clear—summer is optimal season.
Custer #1 Campground is situated along the Custer Motorway above the historic townsite of Custer, a gold rush boomtown in the late 1800s. The campground consists of 6 sites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings that include cooking grills. Notably, the campground has a vault toilet and can accommodate trailers and motorhomes up to 32 feet in length. "This is a GREAT dry camping site," according to one user review, which also noted that they managed to bring a 35-foot bumper pull trailer, although with "a few issues getting it in and out."
