Large RV owners should tour the site before committing since access is limited and the road is unpaved year-round. No garbage service means hauling everything out, and winter snow can cut off the road entirely.

There are spots for small RV's in this campground. Check it out before you pull in. Bring your OHV and take a road ride or bring your horse and go big game hunting. Don't forget your camera for nature viewing and photographing. There are dayhike opportunities close by.
The elevation is 4,480 ft. The campground is composed of upper and lower camping areas and is pack it in, pack it out. The lower camping area is adjacent to the Red River with sites overlooking the river or a meadow. The upper area is on a heavily wooded hillside. The campground is convenient for accessing the 101 mile Magruder Road Corridor between Red River, ID and Darby, MT. The road was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and officially created as a "corridor" by the Congress in 1980. It is a single lane dirt road suitable for high clearance vehicles, dirt bikes and mountain bikes. The road passes through two wildernesses: Selway-Bitterroot and the Frank Church-River of No Return. There are several "primitive" campgrounds in route for this recommended two- day trip. Obtain more information from the Red River Ranger District Office.

The parking aprons are grass and dirt. There is an RV waste station, with potable water, available at the Red River Ranger District Office (Red River Ranger Station). From Elk City two interesting Adventure Roads can be experienced. The Elk City Wagon Road is 53 miles of unpaved roadway with tight switchbacks and some narrow spots. Those who complete the Elk City Wagon Road adventure in Harpster will have a new appreciation for the challenges of travel 100 years ago. The second adventure is the Gold Rush Loop Tour. From Elk City, ID, take State Rt. 14 west 2.3 miles to Red River Ranger Station sign (Forest Rt. 222). Turn left onto Rt. 222 and go 14 miles to Red River Hot Springs sign at "Y" intersection. Bear left onto Forest Rt. 234 and go 5.6 miles to campground sign - campground is on both sides of the road.

Summer brings daytime highs in the mid-60s to low-80s°F and nighttime lows in the 40s-50s at this elevation. Trails and river access remain fully passable from June through September. July and August draw the most visitors on weekends, but weekdays stay quiet. Winter snowfall closes the access road, which remains unpaved year-round. Spring and fall shoulder seasons offer solitude but require checking road conditions before arrival.
