<p>Hinman (Park) Campground has 13 primitive single-family campsites and is located near Elk River in the Routt National Forest and 22 miles north of Steamboat Springs, Colorado and is a gateway to the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness along the Elk River Corridor.</p><p>Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs up to 22 feet long. Each site also has a picnic table, fire ring and grate. The primitive campground is first-come, first- serve and usually open early June through October. Amenities include two vault toilets <em>(no water available)</em>. Cell service is also not available in the area.</p><p>Outdoor recreation in the area includes fishing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, ATVing and picnicking. Wildlife viewing is also good in the area.</p><p>The campground is located near the Elk River outside of Steamboat Springs. It has 5 campsites that are reservable and 8 sites that are first come first served.<br /><br />This campground recently underwent a timber sale and clean-up to remove hazard trees due to the mountain pine beetle outbreak. The elevation is 7,600 ft. The campground is a single loop in a stand of Lodgepole pine. The understory is composed of heavy grass, lupine, columbine and other vegetation giving it a soft, lacy appearance. The campground is very quiet and rustic. RVrs are faced with tight turns on the interior road. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques.

The parking aprons are dirt. A RV waste station available for a fee at KOA campground in Steamboat Springs, CO - 2 miles west of downtown on US Rt. 40. There is potable water.
In Steamboat Springs, CO (west end), take County Rt. 129 north 17.9 miles to campground sign (County Rt. 64/Forest Rt. 400). Turn right onto Rts. 64/400 and go 5.6 miles to another campground sign (County Rt. 64A). Turn right at sign onto Rt. 64A and go 0.5 miles to still another campground sign. Turn right at sign into campground. NOTE: County Rt. 64/Forest Rt. 400 turns to dirt after the first 0.9 miles.

Visitor opportunities abound on almost 2.9 million acres of National Forest System lands.</p> <p>The Medicine Bow and Routt National Forests provide year-round recreation opportunities for you. These activities include hiking, biking, camping, horseriding, OHV riding, fishing and hunting, just to name a few. Beautiful vistas await sightseers and photographers.</p> <p>The topography varies greatly within the national forests. Elevation ranges from 5,500 to 12,940 feet. The climate ranges from semi-arid at low elevations to colder and less arid in the high country. Frost may occur at any time, and visitors to the higher elevations should be prepared for harsh weather, including snow and high winds, even during the summer months.</p> <p>The Thunder Basin National Grassland provides unique opportunities for recreation, including hiking, sightseeing, hunting, and fishing. There are no developed campgrounds; however, dispersed camping is allowed. Best season: summer. Summer is the best time to visit Hinman Campground because the site is open and most trails, river access, and high-elevation passes are free of snow — ideal for hiking, fishing, mountain biking, and wildlife viewing. Expect daytime highs typically in the mid-60s to mid-70s °F (around 60–75°F) and cool nights in the mid-30s to low-50s °F (35–50°F), with frequent afternoon thunderstorms; dress in layers and plan morning outings. Hinman Campground offers 12 campsites, 6 of which are reservable and the rest available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each site is equipped with a campfire ring and picnic table. The campground is situated at 7,700 ft elevation in the Routt National Forest, near the South Fork of the Elk River. Notable amenities include vault toilets, but water is not available on-site. A trash collection system is in place.
