Big enough to be overwhelming, still intimate enough to feel the pulse of time, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park exposes you to some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rock, and craggiest spires in North America. With two million years to work, the Gunnison River, along with the forces of weathering, has sculpted this vertical wilderness of rock, water, and sky.

Summer offers the warmest, most reliable access to East Portal—daytime highs typically range from the mid-70s to mid-90s°F with cool nights in the 40s–50s°F—making water-based activities and canyon hiking comfortable. This is when the Gunnison River is easiest to fish and the reservoir/river recreation is in full swing, while the limited 15 sites make the campground feel intimate even on busier summer weekends. Expect afternoon mountain thunderstorms to develop on occasion; plan hikes for early- Peak months: July, August, September, June Avoid: November, December, January, February

East Portal Campground offers basic facilities, including picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and seasonal potable water. 'Each site has a pad for the tent, a picnic table, and a fire ring with a grate on top for cooking,' as stated by a user. Cell phone reception and internet connectivity are not available. Trash and recycling collection, as well as food storage lockers, are seasonal services. 'Bathrooms are very clean for campsite bathrooms with a pit toilet,' according to a review.
