Best season: fall. Fall offers the best combination of comfortable weather and solitude at 7,538 ft — expect crisp days typically in the 50s–70s°F and nights that can drop to near or below freezing (30s to low 20s°F) by late October. Cooler water and calmer winds make fishing excellent, canyon colors and migrating waterfowl add to wildlife-viewing opportunities, and the narrow canyon often has fewer visitors than summer. Afternoon thunderstorms are less frequent than in midsummer, so you’ll enjoy more stable skies Peak months: September, October, August, June Avoid: November, December, January, February
Fall gives the best conditions at this elevation—comfortable days and cool nights.
Visitors may sleep in their vehicles in their campsites at all sites, except for the walk-in tent sites at Elk Creek Campground loops A and B, and Gateview Campground.
