You want a central base for exploring Sequoia and Kings Canyon with maintained facilities and trail access.
You need privacy, level sites, or campgrounds without large group activity and noise.
Context for the broader area surrounding Sunset Campground (Ca), sourced from the federal Recreation.gov rec-area record.
Huge mountains, rugged foothills, deep canyons, vast caverns, and the world’s largest trees exemplify the diversity of landscapes, life, and beauty here. Explore these pages to learn about the plants and animals here and the threats they face. Our ancient giant sequoias may seem invincible, but they, too are vulnerable.
Two highways enter the parks. Hwy 180 from Fresno leads east to Kings Canyon National Park, then continues 30 miles east to Cedar Grove. Hwy 198 from Visalia leads east to Sequoia National Park via Three Rivers. Inside the parks, Highway 198 becomes the Generals Highway, which connects 198 to 180. Vehicles over 22-feet long should enter the parks via Highway 180. In winter, the Generals Highway between the parks often closes. Chains may be required on park roads. No roads cross these parks east to west.

Best season: fall. Late summer–early fall delivers the most pleasant combination of cool, clear weather and thin crowds — ideal for hiking, sequoia viewing, and photography. Expect daytime highs around 60–75°F and crisp nights dipping into the 30s–40s, with larches and understory shrubs beginning to show fall color and trails quieter after the summer rush. Because Sunset Campground closes September 2, the prime fall window is the last weeks of August into the very start of September when golden light and lower hum Peak months: September, August, July, June Avoid: October, November, December, January
Late August–early September is prime before closure: cooler temps and excellent sunsets.
