<p>Ponderosa Campground has 21 campsites along a mountain stream under a canopy of Ponderosa Pine, Oak, Madrone & Sycamore trees approximately 13 miles east from Kirk Creek campground on the Nacimiento-Ferguson Road. The Nacimiento-Ferguson Road runs from the coast at Kirk Creek on Rt. 1 to the Big Sur high country. Recreational Vehicles no longer than 35 feet.</p><p>19 sites are reservable. 2 campsites are available first-come, first-serve.</p><p>In campgrounds and picnic areas, dogs mst be kept on a leash. Dogs must wear a collar with current tags at all times, as state and county laws apply on National Forest System lands.</p>

The elevation is 1,500 ft. The campground is located along the Nacimiento River with some sites overlooking the river. The sites are shaded by Live Oaks and Sycamore trees - no Ponderosa pines. There is an active population of ground squirrel- like animals. The drive up Nancimiento Rd has some awesome sites of the Pacific Ocean. From State Rt. 1 at about 100 ft. above sea level, it rises to a high of 2,500 ft. For those with a fear of height, driving on Nancimiento Rd. could be a challenge.

From San Simeon, CA, take State Rt. 1 north 35.1 miles to Nacimiento Rd. sign. Turn right onto Nacimiento Rd. and go 13.6 miles to campground sign. Turn (hard) right at sign and cross bridge into campground. NOTE: Although paved, Nacimiento Rd. is steep and winding with some hairpin turns and is also narrow in places.

Best season: spring. Spring offers the most comfortable weather and the best balance of activities at Ponderosa: daytime highs typically range from the mid-50s to mid-70s°F (around 55–75°F), with cool nights ideal for campfires. River flows are still healthy from winter runoff, making fishing and brisk river swims and waterfalls most rewarding, while wildflowers and fresh green canyon slopes make hikes and wildlife viewing especially scenic. Ponderosa Campground provides a range of facilities aimed at enhancing the visitor experience amidst a scenic natural setting. The campground features equipped picnic tables and campfire rings with grills at each site, vault toilets, drinking water, and trash collection bins spread across the area. While the campground is accessible for tent and RV campers, it lacks utility hookups, and additional vehicles are not permitted beyond the two per site limit.
