ELDORADO
You want a small, quiet base for summer lake and trail access in the Sierra.
You need a large campground, shoulder-season availability, or budget-friendly rates.
Official information for Red Fir from the federal Recreation.gov facility record.
Take Highway 50 east of Placerville for approximately 21 miles to Ice House Road. At the river take a left and go north 28 miles, then veer right at the fork in the road and continue 9 miles to Red Fir Group campground.
Compare with similar sites, watch availability, and build a packing list — Camp Sage handles all of it.
Best season: summer. Summer is the clear standout — warm, mostly dry days (typically 65–80°F) and cool nights (mid-30s to low 50s°F) at 6,400 ft make this ideal for swimming, boating, fishing, and hiking. The reservoir is open and accessible, trails are snow-free, and the alpine wildflower and granite scenery are at their most inviting. Expect moderate crowds on holiday weekends and at peak midday hours, but the group campground and the larger Crystal Basin area still feel relatively remote compared with lower-elev. Peak months: July, August, June, September Avoid: October, November, December, January
Open June 20–Sept; best window with 65–80°F days, trails and lake fully accessible.

Red Fir Group Campground offers a primitive camping experience with well-defined features. This group-only site has accessible vault toilets and drinking water. The group kitchen area is equipped with multiple picnic tables, a campfire circle, and grills. However, the campground lacks modern amenities like electricity, sewer, or RV support, as RVs are explicitly not permitted.
