Horse campers, mountain bikers, and hikers who want a genuine base for the Los Burros Trail will get the most out of this. Fall is the sweet spot: aspen color peaks late September, elk are rutting, and nights in the 20s thin the crowd.
No potable water on-site means you haul everything in yourself, and the access road can wash out badly after rain. The vault toilets close November through April, and peak weekends attract trash and occasionally rough company.

<p>Los Burros is located at the edge of a beautiful meadow and is characterized by aspen trees scattered throughout the area. This campground is also the site of a former Forest Service Ranger Station with an old barn and a corral that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.</p>
The elevation is 8,000 ft. The campground is pack it in, pack it out and is the former site of the Los Burros Ranger Station, which was built about 1909. The Ranger's house and barn are all that remain. There are several corrals for horses. Sites are large and widely scattered and located next to a large meadow. The campground has the "circle your wagons around the fire" feel. It is rustic and attractive with a grassy understory. There is gas, limited groceries and a casino in Hon-Dah, about 4 miles west on State Rt. 260 (from Vernon Rd.). Although Sitgreaves National Forest 312 The White Mountains Trail System is awesome. Trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing crisscross the forest. Most trails start at around 6,300 feet elevation and can reach elevations of 7,900 feet with difficulty levels ranging from moderate to very challenging. used by equestrian campers, it is not designated just for their use.
Open all year, weather permitting. Restrooms open only from May 1 through October 31.
The parking aprons are grass and not well defined; will accommodate most any siz RV. An RV waste station with no potable water is available for a fee at the Hon-Dah RV Park, 4 miles west on State Rt. 260 (from Mt. Vernon Rd.).
From Lakeside, AZ, take State Rt. 260 east 6.8 miles (through McNary) to Vernon Rd. sign (County Rt. 3140). Turn left onto Vernon Rd. and go 0.2 miles to stop sign. Continue straight on dirt road and go 3.1 miles to where County Rt. 3140 changes to Forest Rt. 224. Continue straight on Rt. 224 for 4.1 miles to campground sign. Turn right at sign and go 0.4 miles to campground.

Fall is the standout season. Aspens peak in late September through early October, and the dry weather makes hiking easy. Daytime temps run 50s to 60s in September, cooling into the 40s and 50s by October. Nights drop into the 20s and 30s, so bring layers. Elk rut activity peaks, and you'll avoid the summer monsoons. Summer days reach the mid-70s to low 80s with comfortable, dry air. Winter brings heavy snow and freezing temps. Vault toilets close late fall through early spring.
Fall is the standout season; aspens peak late Sept–Oct and scenery is especially notable.
