Go if

Tent campers and fly fishers after genuine solitude will find it here. Spring is the best window, with snowmelt feeding the river and daytime highs in the 50s-70s. At $7-14 a night, it's hard to beat for a streamside site with fire rings, vault toilets, and elk wandering through.

Skip if

No potable water on-site means you're hauling every drop yourself, and the water system is shut down for the season as of mid-October. No cell coverage is real, not marginal. Anyone needing hookups, connectivity, or RV access should look elsewhere in Apache-Sitgreaves.

Overview

Deer Creek Campground is the most rustic area along the East Fork of the Black River. The East Fork meanders through the forested valley shaded by tall ponderosa pines and bordered by grasses, alders, and streamside hardwoods.

Campsites are located a few steps from the stream to protect the Black River's unique riparian zone, but access to the river is easy as the undergrowth serves more to enhance the river's picturesque nature than to obstruct easy passage.
