About this campground

Nestled on the enchanting lower slopes of Mt. Shasta, McBride Springs Campground offers an intimate escape into nature with just 10 thoughtfully spaced campsites. This hidden gem welcomes tent campers and small RV adventurers seeking a tranquil mountain retreat. Each site comes equipped with classic camping amenities including sturdy picnic tables and fire rings perfect for evening gatherings. While the campground features vault toilets and a charming hand-pump water spigot that adds to the authentic outdoor experience, remember to bring your water filter or be prepared to boil the crystal-clear spring water before drinking.
McBride Springs Campground is a small and primitive campground with limited amenities, making it suitable for tent camping and small RVs. Group camping and cabin accommodations are not available.
Historical SignificanceMcBride Springs tells a story of resilience and renewal. In 2009, nature threw a curveball when root disease swept through the campground's majestic white firs, prompting dedicated Forest Service teams to step in as guardians of this beloved spot. By 2012, fresh saplings were taking root where giants once stood, symbolizing the forest's incredible ability to heal and regenerate. Today, visitors witness this ongoing transformation firsthand, camping among both recovering forest and enduring natural beauty that continues to draw outdoor enthusiasts from near and far.
Weather and SeasonsMountain weather here dances between extremes, keeping every visit exciting and unique. Summer days might greet you with warm sunshine perfect for hiking, only to surprise you with a dusting of snow at higher elevations. As darkness falls, the mountain's cool breath sweeps down the slopes, transforming balmy afternoons into crisp nights that demand cozy sleeping bags and campfire stories. Smart campers pack layers and embrace the mountain's moody temperament as part of the adventure.
ElevationPerched between 4,800 and 5,000 feet above sea level, McBride Springs occupies that sweet spot where mountain magic happens. At this elevation, the air carries a refreshing crispness that city dwellers dream about, while temperatures stay pleasantly cool even during summer's peak. Don't be surprised if you wake to find a delicate frost kissing your tent or catch glimpses of snow lingering in shaded hollows – it's all part of camping in Mt. Shasta's elevated embrace.
Natural Features and SceneryPicture yourself waking to the gentle babble of a miniature creek as it winds through towering conifers, all while mighty Mt. Shasta stands guard overhead. McBride Springs creates a lush riparian oasis where spring-fed waters nurture a verdant corridor of life amid the mountain landscape. The campground's star attraction – its namesake springs – bubbles up from mysterious depths, creating a ribbon of water that transforms the forest floor into a thriving ecosystem. Here, ancient trees provide natural cathedral ceilings while the creek's soothing soundtrack accompanies your entire stay.
Geological RegionMcBride Springs Campground claims prime real estate on Mt. Shasta's lower flanks, where geology meets poetry at 4,800 to 5,000 feet elevation. This unique riparian wonderland exists thanks to the springs that emerge from the volcanic mountain's hidden aquifers, creating an unexpected oasis of flowing water and lush vegetation. The campground showcases the fascinating interplay between Mt. Shasta's volcanic origins and the life-giving waters that seep through its ancient rocks, offering campers a front-row seat to one of nature's most captivating geological stories.
