The rough, stone-strewn access road has damaged tires in reviewer reports, and storm blowdown has stripped out most of the tree cover between sites. Campers who want shade, privacy, or a real swimming beach should look at Long Lake Recreation Area instead.

<p><strong>Birch Grove Recreation Area will be open for the 2019 camping season.</strong></p><p>Birch Grove Recreation Area is a family favorite if you are looking for a base camp to explore the Bayfield Peninsula. It is nestled between 22-acre East and 16-acre West Twin Lakes and is close to the community of Washburn. Each lake has a small boat access and includes bass, panfish and northern pike. During the late summer berry picking is a popular activity in the nearby Moquah Barrens.</p><p>Each campsite has a defined parking spur, fire ring, picnic table and some have a tent pad and can accommodate RV's up to 35 feet. Drinking water, vault toilets and a small picnic area are available. There are also areas where campers can access the lake for swimming. </p><p>This campground is near Long Lake Recreation Area which has a swimming beach, trail and carry-in boat access. <a href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/cnnf/recreation/hiking/recarea/?recid=27853&actid=50">Valhalla Recreation Area</a> is also nearby that has more than 20 miles of hiking and biking trails during the summer months. </p><p>So, if you like to boat, fish or picnic then the Birch Grove Recreation Area is the place for you, conveniently located just 8 miles west of Washburn.</p>
The elevation is 1,000 ft. The campground stretches out between East and West Twin Lakes. Both lakes can be accessed via boat ramps from the campground. Some sites overlook one lake or the other and all the sites have direct access to the water. The surrounding forest is in transition from a birch grove to a stand of maple and other deciduous trees suggesting pleasant Fall foliage. The lush young vegetation provides excellent privacy between campsites. Both East and West Twin lakes appear to be good canoe lakes. A spur to the Valhalla Trail is adjacent to West Twin Lake's boat ramp. Possible day trips from the campground include Moquah Natural Area, Moquah Barrens Wildlife Area, Friendly Valley beach, Washburn for a cook's night-out and Apostle Island National Seashore. NOTE: ATV may be driven in and driven out the campground. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques.

The parking aprons are gravel. Caution: Low hanging branches reach into some campsites.
From Washburn, WI, at intersection of State Rt. 13 (Bayfield St) and County Rt. C, take Rt. 13 south 1.3 miles to "Nat'l Forest Campground" sign. Turn right after sign onto Wannebo Rd. and go 7.2 miles to campground sign (Forest Rt. 252). Turn right at sign, onto Forest Rt. 252 and go 1.8 miles to another campground sign (Forest Rt. 435). Turn right onto Rt. 435 and go 0.5 miles to another campground sign. Turn right at sign into campground. NOTE: Wannebo Rd becomes Forest Rt 252 and gravel after 6.4 mile. Summer brings daytime highs of 65 to 80°F, with cooler lake breezes dropping nighttime temperatures into the 50s. July and August deliver the best conditions for swimming and paddling, along with calm waters for fishing and accessible trails. Afternoon thunderstorms appear occasionally. Winter transforms the area for snow sports, though summer remains the primary camping season. Late spring through early autumn provides comfortable temperatures and long daylight.

The Birch Grove Recreation Area offers a rustic camping experience with a focus on natural surroundings and basic amenities. Each campsite includes a defined parking spur, fire ring, picnic table, and some also have tent pads. The campground provides potable water via a hand pump, but some user reviews caution that it is difficult to use and may have high manganese levels. There are four vault toilets available, described as clean and well-maintained. Showers are not available, and there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups. Campers can access the lakes for swimming and non-motorized boating. A small picnic area is located near East Twin Lake. Cell phone reception is reportedly better than in nearby towns, especially for AT&T users.
