Go if

Kayakers and kayak-fishers targeting bass and pike on East and West Twin Lakes will get the most out of this place. At $8-$15 a night with large gravel pads that fit RVs to 35 feet, it punches well above its price for a national forest site.

Skip if

The rough, stone-strewn access road has damaged tires in reviewer reports, and storm blowdown has stripped out most of the tree cover between sites. Campers who want shade, privacy, or a real swimming beach should look at Long Lake Recreation Area instead.

About the campground

The elevation is 1,000 ft. The campground stretches out between East and West Twin Lakes. Both lakes can be accessed via boat ramps from the campground. Some sites overlook one lake or the other and all the sites have direct access to the water. The surrounding forest is in transition from a birch grove to a stand of maple and other deciduous trees suggesting pleasant Fall foliage. The lush young vegetation provides excellent privacy between campsites. Both East and West Twin lakes appear to be good canoe lakes. A spur to the Valhalla Trail is adjacent to West Twin Lake's boat ramp. Possible day trips from the campground include Moquah Natural Area, Moquah Barrens Wildlife Area, Friendly Valley beach, Washburn for a cook's night-out and Apostle Island National Seashore. NOTE: ATV may be driven in and driven out the campground. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques.
