Best season: spring. Spring delivers the best combination of active creek flows, prolific hatches and top-tier trout fishing, plus abundant wildflowers and cool, comfortable days—ideal for hiking and creekside camping. Expect daytime highs roughly 50–70°F and nighttime lows around 30–40°F from late May into June, with Big Smoky Creek running strongest during snowmelt (late May–early June). Trails are generally less crowded than mid-summer, but be mindful of swollen creek crossings and slick banks during peak runoff. Peak months: June, May, July, September Avoid: December, January, February
Spring highlighted as best: strong snowmelt flows, productive fishing hatches, abundant wildflowers.
Bowns Campground, situated along Big Smoky Creek, offers essential amenities including picnic tables, fire rings, drinking water available seasonally, and restrooms. According to one user, the water pump handle was missing during their visit, which rendered water unavailable on-site. Additionally, the site's maintenance was criticized for being overgrown, as 'it looks like the sites have not been weedwacked for a couple of weeks.'
